Foundation Subjects

 Curriculum Organisation:

  • Each class has six Topics throughout the year, with one topic per half term 
  • Each Topic has a ‘driver’, the area of the curriculum which dominates its learning. This is  either Humanities (Geography or History) or Science and Technology. 
  • Throughout each topic, staff look at ways to develop resilience, build a sense of community and encourage mindfulness as these are the areas where we believe our children need to become 21st century citizens



Science teaching at Bradfield Dungworth aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of Science, today and for the future.

Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school. Topics, such as Plants, are taught in Key Stage One and studied again in further detail throughout Key Stage Two. This model allows children to build upon their prior knowledge and increases their enthusiasm for the topics whilst embedding this procedural knowledge into the long-term memory.

All children are encouraged to develop and use a range of skills including observations, planning and investigations, as well as being encouraged to question the world around them and become independent learners in exploring possible answers for their scientific based questions. Specialist vocabulary for topics is taught and built up, and effective questioning to communicate ideas is encouraged. Concepts taught should be reinforced by focusing on the key features of scientific enquiry, so that pupils learn to use a variety of approaches to answer relevant scientific questions.

History and Geography

Our high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It inspires pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. We equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Children investigate a range of places – both in Britain and abroad – to help develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes. We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area of Dungworth, Sheffield and the Peak District so that they can develop a real sense of who they are, their heritage and what makes our local area unique and special. We also develop the children’s ability to apply geographical skills to enable them to confidently communicate their findings and geographical understanding to a range of audiences.

Art and Design and Technology

We believe that high-quality Art lessons will inspire children to think innovatively and develop creative procedural understanding.
Our Art curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth.

 It is paramount that art work be purposeful; be this as a means of expression or to explore the styles of other artists that inspire our own work. Pupils should be clear what the intended outcomes are and have a means to measure their own work against this.
In Art, children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving.

We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make
products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering
their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Design and Technology is an inspiring,
rigorous and practical subject. It can be found in many of the objects children use
each day and is a part of children’s immediate experiences. Design and Technology
encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both
as individuals and as members of a team.

Our  Design and Technology curriculum combines skills, knowledge, concepts and values to enable children to tackle real problems. It can improve analysis, problem solving, practical capability and evaluation skills. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines  The children are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Standalone Subjects

Music is taught in blocks during the school year. Y3/4 pupils receive recorder and flute tuition from a specialist music teacher so they can learn to read music. The rest of the school follow the Charanga music scheme endorsed by Sheffield Music Hub. All pupils develop their singing ability in daily singing during assemblies. The school has a strong culture of musical performance and all pupils participate in a musical play every year. Pupils also have the opportunity to learn flute, guitar or keyboard in small groups or individuals.

French is taught using the i languages scheme. 

Aims – pupils should be able to

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

The curriculum provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and lays the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3.  It enables pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary

PSHE  is timetabled away from Theme based lessons. It is based on a  PSHE scheme of work for primary schools developed in Ealing. This scheme of work is fully planned and resourced for nursery to year six.

The scheme includes the overarching themes of health and wellbeing, living in the wider world and relationships where safeguarding, SMSC and British values are the golden threads throughout.

The school will revisit this area of the curriculum in 2019-20 in light of new Government legislation.

Y3 and Y4 followed the 'Special Friends' programme in 2018/19 which teaches children strategies to support them with the development of good mental health. Y5/6 receive 'top up' lessons from the Special Friends' programme. Y5/6 are trained in 'Conflict Resolution'


The school follows the  Sheffield SACRE (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education) locally agreed syllabus.
